It's a Microbe's World, We Just Live In It.

Microbiology... Yummy!!

I used to tutor microbiology at College of Marin, but I'm not going to school up in Marin anymore, so... Here I am! I'm still loving the micro... Got a question? Ask. I hope I can answer it! I'll try!

Some Helpful Links

Cunningham's Corner
Pat Cunningham sends the most helpful links. She's in 240 right now, so she know's what's up and what you guys need, so I thought she should have her own links page.

Online Practice Quizzes
Very helpful and almost just like our lab.

Antibiotics
Be prepared for your essay question on test 2!

Harrison's Online
Free for two weeks- info for your disease presentations.

Cells Alive!
This is the coolest site!

Study Tips
Pretty good ones from the publisher of the Microbiology text.

Molecular Cell Biology
This is a site for cell bio, but it has alot of neat interactive things that you will need to know for lecture.

The Micro Text Book's Site
I haven't searched through this much yet, but I still think it's pretty good. Compare your class notes with the chapter outlines from here. Coolio?

This is for a micro class somewhere else.
There's some nice stuff here, and you might want to keep checking back.

Virtual Microbiology Lab
For your unknowns, here's a virtual excercise on the tests and things you will be doing
I have to say OH... MY... GOD! This totally rules!

What Ascaris can do!
Not for the weak hearted.

Understanding the Immune System
Very simplified.

One of My Favorite Bio Sites
This guy is great. Check out his links.

Bristol Biomedical Image Archive
Some good Parisitology or Disease Presentation stuff

An Excellent Micro Bio Image Archive
Registration is free, searching is fun & the photos will give you a very clear indication of the shape and grouping of many types of bacteria.

Parisitic Diseases
Parisitology stuff and Disease Presentation ideas

Dr. Ogilvie's Immunology Outline
You may want to print this out before Jamie lectures on Immunology. There are points on Dr. Ogilvie's outline that Jamie covers & if you read it beforehand, you will find it easier to follow along in 240.

Highly Suggested Readings

A Color Atlas of Parasitology
I just met the author. He wrote the book for his parisitology class. It's a beautiful work! Best examples you'll see anywhere!

Photographic Atlas For The Microbiology Lab
I think this book should be required for the course. It is wonderful.

Control of Communicable Diseases Manual
Call me a freak if you want to, but I've read this cover to cover several times...

The Microbiology Coloring Book
Very nice illustrations of things you will need for both lab and lecture.

Biology Smart (Princeton Review Series)
This is a nice book with simplified explainations of alot of the things you will need to know for lecture exams in 240

Bergey's Manual of Determinative Bacteriology
You will be using this for your unknowns and for the second lab practical. The school provides them, but you will need to spend alot of time in the lab practicing with it, so if you don't have enough time to stay at school with the book, I highly suggest buying one- you can always sell it back later!

Great Refrence Books

For those of you going into the healthcare profession, these books could help you not only with Bio 240, but with future classes!

Dictionary of Word Roots and Combining Forms
This book will help you understand the terms used in lecture AND help you determine the shape, grouping, and some other characteristics of the bacteria we use in lab.

Campell's Biology Package
I have been using one or another eddition of Campell's Biology since High School. This is the best biology book I have ever found. It is an excellent refrence for Microbiology, Anatomy, Physiology, Molecular Cell Biology, Immunology, and the list goes on. If you have such classes in your future, you will need this book because it explains things on a very simplified, yet technical level. During tutoring sessions, when we are going over lecture topics, I will bring my copy so that you can see what I mean.

Immunology
My friend teaches Immunology from this book at Christian Brothers University in Memphis, TN. I bought this as a refrence for the immunology section of 240. The first two chapters are about all that we covered, but like I said about Campell's Biology, it is an excellent refrence for the future healthcare professional.

Medical Terminology, A Systems Approach
This is the best medical terminology book I've seen so far. I got this one just for fun, but for Pre-Med and Nursing, this book is almost an abosulte must have.

You teach best what you most need to learn.
